Getting a college education can be one of the most important experiences a person can have. But not everyone can afford to go to college. Most students do not have the resources needed to attend higher education. These resources are needed to attend the best schools. But in each location, there are several colleges and universities to choose from. In the state of North Carolina, among the best schools there includes Barber College.
Barber College, also known as Barber–Scotia College, is a historically black college found in Concord, North Carolina. The school began in 1867 as a female seminary known as the Scotia Seminary. It was chartered in 1870 and it was founded by the Reverend Luke Dorland. The school was a project by the Presbyterian Church to prepare young African American southern women for careers as teachers and social workers and teachers.
The seminary was created in the likeness of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, and it was even known as the Mount Holyoke of the South. The seminary taught several subjects including science, domestic arts and grammar. In 1908, the seminary had just 19 faculty members and around 300 students. In 1916, the school was renamed as the Scotia Women’s College. Then in 1930, the seminary had a merger with another women’s college, the Barber Memorial College. Barber College was established in Anniston Alabama in 1896. It was built by Margaret M. Barber as a memorial to her husband. After the merger, the school changed its name to the Barber-Scotia Junior College for women.
Today, the school offers 4 degree programs including Bachelors of Science in Bio-Energy, Bachelors of Arts in Business, Bachelors of Arts in Sports Management, and a Bachelors of Arts in Religious Studies. Each of these academic disciplines features several fields of concentrations. The school has an average enrollment of around 100 students each term.
Barber College is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). The school currently fields teams in several varsity sports including men and women's basketball team, cross country, soccer, and track and field. Barber-Scotia also fields a men's post-graduate basketball team. The school colors are Royal Blue and Grey and the school nickname are the Saber-Tooth Tigers.
